Brothers Keeper Veteran Foundation is built on real stories and real impact, where veterans and families share how support, connection, and care have made a difference in their lives. If you want to understand the mission on a deeper level, these testimonials offer a firsthand look at the impact BKVF creates every day.
The help that BKVF has given to me and some of my fellow Veterans has been fantastic. The Brothers Keepers Veteran foundation took over after the VA let our group go saying they were no longer going to support groups and were going to one on one counseling instead. One on one counseling isn’t too bad but it would take the VA so long to get you in to see them.

One on one counseling isn’t too bad but it would take the VA so long to get you in to see them. it might be a couple months down the line before you could even get an appointment which in my book is way to long and to late for help when you need it! The BKVF took over for the group and allowed our group to continue meeting with the help of a counselor to be there to guide my fellow veterans and myself to maintain our mental health. Again I can’t say it enough thank you to the BKVF for all that they do.

Thanks to the incredible people at Brothers Keeper, I am one step closer on my journey to recovery. This brand new chapter of my life is just starting to get written however Brothers Keeper is within the first paragraph! Though I cannot repay their kindness today, I fully intend to pay it forward someday in the future. I will also recommend them to any struggling vets in need of help I may cross paths with.

I want to thank you so much for the help that you did for me adopting Spot! I am sorry I have not sent this sooner. He adjusted perfectly to his new life. He has brought great joy to my life and I hope the same for him. It is wonderful having him as a companion that can go with me everywhere. Once it starts to warm up here more in Michigan there will be a lot of adventures to be had!

Just a quick note of “THANK YOU” to Brothers Keeper Veterans Foundation I was able to receive follow on treatment at Sober Living and enroll in Warriors Hearts Partial Hospital Program (PHP) for my alcohol addiction.
Without their compassion to help Veterans in need I would have not been able to receive.

Good afternoon,
I wanted to take a moment out of my busy schedule to highlight the incredible work that Brothers Keeper Veteran Foundation (BKVF) does in supporting active-duty service members, veterans, and their families.
First and foremost, Chris Cathers is an exceptional individual—someone who selflessly dedicates his time and energy to serving this community with unwavering passion. Even more impressive is the outstanding team he has built at BKVF, whose impact is truly life-changing.
As a veteran myself and a participant in various BKVF services, I am beyond grateful for their dedication, compassion, and unwavering support. In a landscape filled with veteran nonprofits, BKVF stands above the rest.
If you or someone you know is struggling, I strongly encourage you to reach out to BKVF. You will be amazed by the level of care, support, and love they provide.

I am an Air Force veteran and was married to an Air Force EOD technician for 24 years. Following multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, my husband struggled to adjust to civilian life while battling mental health challenges and addiction. The invisible wounds of war profoundly changed him, and despite our efforts to navigate those struggles together, the weight of those challenges ultimately led to the end of our marriage.
Testimonial - Mandy Royall
Motivated by those experiences, I pursued and completed my Graduate degree in Social Work, working toward licensure with the hope of helping other veterans and families facing similar circumstances. Around that same time, my ex-husband reached a point where he was finally ready to seek help. Through coordinating his care with the VA and community providers, I gained firsthand insight into the barriers veterans often encounter when seeking mental health and recovery support. Those experiences not only strengthened my ability to advocate for other veterans and their families, but also helped rebuild our relationship.
In March 2024, I was introduced to BKVF and began volunteering as a case manager, helping connect veterans with critical services and resources. From the very beginning, the work felt deeply meaningful and personal. My education and lived experience came together in a way that allowed me to support veterans and their families with both professional knowledge and genuine empathy.
BKVF also became an important part of my ex-husband’s journey. Through the support and connection he found with Chris and the BKVF family, he experienced a sense of understanding, camaraderie, and belonging that had been missing for many years. That connection made a meaningful difference in his life and gave him a place where he felt seen and supported without judgment.
In January 2025, my ex-husband unexpectedly passed away. The loss has been heartbreaking for our family, and my children and I continue to grieve deeply. Even through that grief, I remain committed to honoring his memory by helping other veterans and families facing the same challenges we experienced.
The work I do at BKVF is deeply personal to me. Every veteran who comes to us for help is someone’s parent, spouse, child, or friend. My experiences have given me not only professional training, but also compassion, understanding, and determination to help veterans find support, healing, and hope before families reach a point of loss.

Before I found Brothers Keeper Veteran Foundation I was pushed out of the understaffed VA system and entered a queue for community care, it’s been four months now without access to mental health services and BKVF has absolutely filled the gap and provided a sense of community with high fidelity weekly training and peer support all for no-cost to me and no questions asked.

I am deeply grateful to Waylon, Andrew, Paul, and the entire Brothers Keeper Veterans Foundation for stepping up when I needed it most. They truly live up to their name—keeping watch over fellow veterans and restoring not just homes, but lives.

My home was severely damaged during a hurricane about 4 years ago. The roof was compromised, a tree crashed through the wall and destroyed the chimney, leaving tens of thousands of dollars in unrepaired damage. Unfortunately, a storm-chasing contractor took advantage of the situation, scamming me out of additional insurance funds and leaving me to face the growing deterioration alone. With each passing year, especially as another harsh winter approached, the overwhelming fear of losing my home entirely weighed heavier on me every day.
That’s when my good friend Paul Mullis, through the Brothers Keeper Veterans Foundation, connected me with Waylon Parrigin. Waylon responded immediately with compassion and action. He arranged for a local veteran, Andrew, to come out quickly and patch the damaged side of my home—just in time, as a major snowstorm hit and dumped 8 inches of snow overnight.
Though it’s a temporary patch, the help from Brothers Keeper Veterans Foundation lifted an enormous burden from my shoulders and gave me something I hadn’t felt in years: hope. For the first time, I can see light at the end of a very long, dark tunnel.
I am deeply grateful to Waylon, Andrew, Paul, and the entire Brothers Keeper Veterans Foundation for stepping up when I needed it most. They truly live up to their name—keeping watch over fellow veterans and restoring not just homes, but lives.
Highly recommended to any veteran in need. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

I cannot express in words the gratitude I feel. Knowing that there are people so kind and generous that support us Veterans, is a feeling that I have trouble describing. I guess if I were to sum it up into a word, it would be Love. I feel loved and I hope in this message I can convey how appreciative and thankful I am for all the donors that have helped those that have needed it.

To the generous Donors,
My name is Joel Collins. I was in the United States Marine Corps from 2001 to 2008. I deployed on two combat tours while in service and was stationed outside the United States for several years as well. I ended my active service a Sergeant or E-5.
My twin brother joined the Marines in 2000 and we were stationed on the same base in Camp Lejeune NC. He also deployed on our tour to Iraq in 2002. He did 4 years active and returned home to start his family.
We both brought home with us, things form the service that we were extremely proud of as well as things that we did not understand, at the time.
While I was still on active duty, somewhere in between deployments, I’m ashamed to admit that I had begun to have a problem with alcohol. It started as a way to numb thoughts and feelings and was everywhere in the culture where I resided. Unfortunately, it became an unhealthy coping mechanism that intricately wove its way deep into my life.
As a troubled alcoholic, I ended my years in the service and tried reintegrating back into society. I was able to maintain this way of living for many years, but it was a powder keg just waiting to blow.
In 2023 after starting a family of my own, I attempted to stop drinking and all sorts of troubles surfaced. The troubles lay dormant as long as I was drinking. I drank heavily every day and tried to lead a respectable hard-working life at the same time.
In 2024 my then wife, saw the first real episode of my PTSD. It scared her to death and she had no idea what was happening or why. I have very little recollection of the moment other than what she told me happened. I was hospitalized for a few days and released.
Toward the end of 2024 I had started to have regular episodes, that I was not remembering. One involved a firearm and talks of suicide, and the others involved speaking gibberish to the walls. This was enough to scare me and fear for my family’s well-being, so I agreed to seek help.
My sister was pivotal in the beginning of my recovery. She found me down and out and went out of her way to find a recovery center that was Veteran focused and that cared. She found Warriors Heart and made all the arrangements to get me there. I owe her my life.
As I entered treatment, my physical and mental health declined rapidly. For 2024 and the majority of 2025, I was in some form of treatment for mental health and/or substance use. Injuries and illnesses from the service affected my well-being.
This brings us to today. I am currently in sober living at Warriors Heart in Texas. I’m being seen by several medical professionals and am lucky enough to have been granted a service connection which has helped in my recovery.
While in the residential treatment program at Warriors Heart, I reached out to someone I now consider a friend, with the Brothers Keeper Veterans Foundation, Waylon Parrigin. He was amazing and helped me navigate the processes I so badly needed help with.
He mentioned that there are people who, from the kindness of their hearts, donate to help Veterans that are struggling with life (among many other things). This was crazy to me! I could not wrap my head around it as Id been living in my own trapped mind for years consumed by guilt, fear, anxiety, and major
depression. Because of YOU, the donor, I have a safe comfortable place to continue in my recovery. I’m also able to help my family and children who need it without me being able to provide a solid working income for them, while I am in treatment.
From me and my family,
Thank you.
Cordially,
Joel Collins

As a veteran facing significant personal challenges, including substance abuse and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), I found myself in a place where hope felt distant and the path forward unclear. During one of the most difficult periods of my life, Brothers Keeper Veteran Foundation stepped in with compassion, dedication, and unwavering support.

I am writing this testimony to express my deepest gratitude and sincere appreciation for the profound impact Brothers Keeper Veteran Foundation has had on my life.
Through their generous care and aid, I was provided access to therapy sessions that became a cornerstone of my healing process. These sessions offered me a safe and structured environment to confront trauma, develop healthier coping mechanisms, and begin rebuilding my mental and emotional stability. The professional support I received helped me regain clarity, confidence, and a renewed sense of purpose.
In addition to therapeutic care, the Foundation provided invaluable assistance with my disability-related matters. Navigating disability claims and benefits can be overwhelming and complex, especially while dealing with mental health struggles. Brothers Keeper Veteran Foundation guided me through this process, ensuring I had the resources and advocacy necessary to pursue the support I earned through my service.
Their legal assistance was equally impactful. During a time when I felt vulnerable and uncertain, they connected me with the proper legal resources and support, helping me address critical issues that could have otherwise derailed my recovery. Their involvement lifted a tremendous burden off my shoulders and allowed me to focus on healing.
Most significantly, Brothers Keeper Veteran Foundation made it possible for me to attend Warriors Heart, an in-patient treatment facility specializing in care for veterans and first responders battling substance abuse and PTSD. This opportunity was life-changing. At Warriors Heart, I received structured, intensive treatment in an environment designed specifically for individuals with experiences like mine. The comprehensive care I received there played a pivotal role in my sobriety and ongoing recovery.
Because of Brothers Keeper Veteran Foundation, I was given more than assistance — I was given hope, stability, and a second chance. Their commitment to veterans is not simply organizational; it is personal, compassionate, and transformative. They do not just provide services; they restore lives.
Today, I stand in a far stronger position mentally, emotionally, and physically than I once did. I am actively engaged in my recovery, better equipped to manage my PTSD, and focused on building a productive and meaningful future. None of this would have been possible without the generosity and dedication of Brothers Keeper Veteran Foundation.
I am deeply grateful for their support and wholeheartedly recommend their services to any veteran in need. Their impact on my life has been profound and enduring.
Respectfully,
Corey Collins USMC
There are moments in life where the floor doesn’t just drop out—it disappears entirely. I found myself in a state of absolute desperation, facing a level of hardship I never thought possible. After an arrest far from home and away from any semblance of a support system, my life unraveled with terrifying speed.

There are moments in life where the floor doesn’t just drop out—it disappears entirely. I found myself in a state of absolute desperation, facing a level of hardship I never thought possible. After an arrest far from home and away from any semblance of a support system, my life unraveled with terrifying speed.
Within just a few weeks, I was in legal trouble for the first time in my life and had lost everything: my job, my home, my vehicle, and every personal belonging I owned. I was a Marine standing alone in the wreckage of my own life.
That is when Brothers Keeper Veteran Foundation (BKVF) stepped in.
They didn’t just see a case number; they saw a brother in need. From the moment they became aware of my situation, they offered more than just resources—they offered an ear and immediate, tangible support.
What sets BKVF apart is their constancy. They didn’t just help me through the first 24 hours and move on. Throughout this ongoing journey, they have remained firmly in my corner, providing the stability and advocacy I needed to start picking up the pieces.
To any veteran who feels like they are drowning: reach out. BKVF lives up to their name. They kept me when I was at my lowest, and I am standing today because they refused to let a fellow service member fall through the cracks.
Semper Fi,
